Film Openings

The following analyzation of film openings are from the genre I chose which was horror/mystery.

Weapons

This film opens with an overlay of a young girl talking. It follows with showing the warm environment of an elementary school, starting off with kids getting off a bus. The music is comforting as it follows a teacher going into her classroom and finding all her kids are absent except for one boy out of her eighteen students. The lighting and music and overlay of the young girl talking don’t match the eerie feeling of why these kids are absent. The girl then explains right after why they are absent, showing a scary scene of kids running out of their houses at the same time at night with their arms out. Again, the music is the same as before – it's comforting in a weird way, yet you know that something creepy is going on. I think that’s what made this movie so recognized when it first came out since this idea for a movie was somewhat unique.

Split

This film opens with eerie music playing in the background with a girl looking concerned. As soon as the voices come in, they are faded almost like distant memories or like she is not involved in the present at all. Then, we can see she is separate from the group entirely. As the other girls are introduced, they get into a car and the conflict is introduced. A man kidnaps them and then they wake up in a whole different room. The whole scene has very cool tones so it further gives off an eerie vibe. This kind of film opening is very engaging and keeps people watching by including a very thrilling scene in the first few minutes.

Trap

The film opens with a bunch of credits and music playing then merges the song into a girl singing the song playing. It gives a very comforting feeling since the girl is singing to a song while in the car with her dad. You can see that they are comfortable with each other and the scene is supposed to paint a comfortable moment, however it doesn't feel that way. This could probably be because of the music change and the no music in some parts of the scene. Although this sets up a warm sweet moment between a dad and a daughter, the whole opening seems somehow off. A lot mystery films do this and include plot twists at the end.
