Establishing a Timeline

Even though I am not fully educated on the subject that is film, I do know that time is the most valuable resource during your production process. So, I consider it important to make a schedule that works for me and one that I can follow without procrastinating every part of the process.

Week 1 (1/16-1/23)

  • Create 3 blogs
  • Think about what genre of film I want my film opening to fall under
Week 2 (1/26-2/1)
  • Create 4 blogs
  • Brainstorming of film ideas
        ○ Decide on the genre of my film opening                                                                                                    ○ Research film opening under genre
  • Create an outline of the plot (main points in film opening)
Week 3 (2/2-2/8)
  • Start writing the script
        ○ Figure out main characters and main plot points
  • Find people who may be interested in participating in my film as an actor/extra
  • Start storyboard
  • Brainstorm filming locations
Week 4 (2/9-2/15)
  • Finish up script
  • Finish up storyboard
  • Have actors/extras for my production
  • Figure out what type of camera I want to use
  • Figure out costume/props/mise-en-scene
Week 5 (2/16-2/22)
  • Assess possible locations
  • Start filming
        ○ Incorporate desired costume/props/mise-en-scene into my film process

Week 6 (2/23-3/1)
  • Finish up filming
  • Start to edit clips I already have
Week 7 (3/2-3/8)
  • Finish editing
  • Create CCRs

These weeks are all going to be busy despite the difference in the assignements needing to be completed for each. I believe that my genre, horror, will be somewhat difficult to create because of some action scenes that take place. Also, the plot I was thinking of consisted of a funeral. Now, it won't be hard to get people to wear all black, but it'll definitely be difficult to find a church and incorporate a scene with a make-shift casket. All my scenes have to be well thought out so that it'll all come together and with this timeline, I believe I can plan it well enough for it to do so.

Transition to Portfoilo Project

 Transitioning into the Portfolio project

I have always wanted to be able to be apart of the producing of a coming-of-age film. So, when I was first introduced to the Portfolio project, I was excited to finally have an opportunity to motivate myself enough to film this. However, I never decided on what exactly I wanted to do. I watched many of coming-of-age films and did my best to find out what made them fall under this genre. By doing so, it was brought to my attention that these movies use a lot of raw and innocent emotions which I loved. Naturally, I wanted to bring the same to my film.

However, as I started to think about it, I'd only be filming a film opening. The film openings for coming-of-ages are not always dramatic at the start. While they can be, they usually just introduce characters and conflicts. To some, this isn't interesting enough as they want to be hooked by the start. So, I settled on filming a horror/mystery film opening that will grab people's attention while also being a form of entertainment.

Portfolio Project Genre #2

 Horror

The audience that usually gets involved with this genre is usually old teengers and young adults with an age range of 16-27.

The type of content within this genre includes gore, supernatural, psychological fear, jumpscares, and anything else that develops a feeling of fear. This is often shown with brutal killings, attacks, chases, unstoppable forces, and discomforting settings where the protagonist(s) are kept in fear and in danger throughout the production. All this is done through shaky camera shots, high contrast lighting, unsettling camera work, sharp/sudden noises, and scary sounds/music.

These type of productions use eerie music in their pivotal scenes and their mise-en-scene is usually dark while their characters usually display discomforting looks to show their fear. That being said, in trailers that are made within this genre, usually contain eerie music with scary narrating along with fast paced cuts that show darkness and danger.

Two films/TV productions that represent this genre include 'IT' and 'The Silence of the Lambs'.

Portfolio Project Genre #1

 Coming-of-age

The typical audience for coming-of-age films are young kids or teenagers and their ages usually range from 11-19. However, these type of films can also appeal to people in the early adult years.

These films usually contain a protagonist who, within their society, find themselves. This could mean that they find their identities and/or become comfortable in them, they find people who they are comfortable around like friends and family, and/or they grow out of childhood and step into adulthood. This is all presented in ways such as first loves/crushes, drama concering friends or family, or losing their innocence and stepping into a new version of themselves.

Some features of narrative image inside this genre are showing relatable kid-like or teen-like problems that we all have faced in that point of our life. This could include showing the protagonist fighting with their friends, family, or their person of interest. Many movies within this genre often use many warm colors to display the innocent complexity of feelings that kids/teens feel. Marketing for this genre often projects the idea of lots of emotion and displays drama with the image of a young individual facing all of this.

Two films/TV productions that represent this genre are 'Ladybird' and 'Didi'.
